Only the Strongest Remain in the 2015 NHL Playoffs

The 2015 NHL Postseason began on Wednesday, April 15th and since the race to the Stanley Cup got underway, hockey fans have witness shocking upsets as well as the complete domination of teams. In the first round of the playoffs, two exciting match-ups went to seven games while only the Anaheim Ducks were able to blowout the Winnipeg Jets. Forget the entertainment provided during the regular season because the best has yet to come as the NHL playoffs wrap up the second round and enters the Conference Finals.

The Anaheim Ducks finished with the number one seed in the Western Conference Pacific for a first round match-up against the Winnipeg Jets, the five seed in the Central division. Unfortunately for the Jets, the Ducks continued on their spree of dominance and eliminated Winnipeg with a series win of four games to none. Led by right wing Corey Perry and centerman Ryan Getzlaf, Anaheim is nearly unstoppable, especially with these two players leading the postseason in total points scored with 14 points and 12 points respectively. The other three first round match-ups in the Western Conference all ended in six games and featured some exciting performances. Pitting fellow foes from the Pacific region against each other, Vancouver faced off against Calgary, but despite the Canucks higher record coming into the playoffs, the Flames came out victorious. The Minnesota Wild finished fourth in the Central division during the regular season but put on a very impressive performance and took down the St. Louis Blues who were ranked number one in the same division. Chicago finished just under the Nashville Predators in the Central division but that didn’t stop the Blackhawks from advancing to round two. Led by All-Star Patrick Kane, the Chicago Blackhawks are an extremely dangerous team that is in search of their second Stanley Cup in three seasons and secured another trip to the Western Conference Final to face off against the Anaheim Ducks.

Meanwhile in the Eastern Conference, both match-up featuring the Tampa Bay Lightning versus the Detroit Red Wings and Washington Capitals against the New York Islanders took the first round to seven games. Although center Tyler Johnson for Tampa Bay had a terrific series, Braydon Coburn and Anton Stralman recorded one goal each in the final game to give the Lightning a 2 to 0 victory for a trip to the second round. The New York Islanders haven’t won a first round playoff match-up in the last 22 years, but the Washington Capitals were merciless as their opponents faced what seemed to be an inevitable fate. Game 7 was tied 1 to 1 in the third period but Evgeny Kuznetsov came up clutch and scored the game winning goal with seven minutes and 18 seconds remaining to keep the Capitals postseason hopes alive. As for the rest of the East, the Montreal Canadiens outlasted the Ottawa Senators in six games and the New York Rangers easily eliminated the Pittsburgh Penguins in five. Centerman Derick Brassard and left wing Rick Nash both came up with big performances for the Rangers to help them advance to the second round.

Round 2 of the NHL Playoffs is coming to a close with the two Western Conference contenders set and two Eastern Conference teams on the verge of victory. With the Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks easily advancing to the Conference Championship, hockey fans are in for a real treat with a match-up between two dominant contenders, while the Tampa Bay Lightning hopes to keep its lead alive entering Game 6 against the Montreal Canadiens and a Game 7 tie-breaker will leave either the New York Rangers or the Washington Capitals a Stanley Cup hopeful and crush championship dreams of the other. All four teams that will advance to the semifinals will be comprised of the best and most talented athletes on the ice, so the competition in the NHL is going to get even hotter as the 2015 Stanley Cup Finals rapidly approach.

Alexander Ovechkin’s Phenomenal Season

OvechkinWinterClassicThe storied career of Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin becomes more and more impressive every time he takes the ice. After being selected with the number one overall pick in the 2004 NHL Draft has, Ovechkin played his rookie season in the Nation’s Capital when he was just 20 years old and instantly took the hockey world by storm. Since then, the player often referred to as “Ovi” or “The Great Eight” by fans has established himself as arguably the greatest Russian to grace the league in just 10 short seasons.

At the peak of his career, Alex Ovechkin’s trophy case is already crowded and will certainly be even more jam packed by the time the Capitals star hangs up his skates. The most talented player in Capitals history has been named to either the First or Second NHL All-Star Team in all but just one of his seasons in professional hockey. If there is a major piece of hardware given out during the postseason NHL Awards, chances are Ovechkin has won it. Throughout his tenure in D.C., the future Hall of Famer has taken home the Calder Trophy, the Art Ross Trophy, three Hart Memorial Trophies, and four Rocket Richard Trophies. In addition to his many individual feats, Ovechkin single handedly turned the Washington Capitals franchise into a perennial winner. Since 2007, Washington has reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs on six occasions, winning the division five of those times. With Ovechkin on the ice in the Verizon Center, there is no doubt that the Caps will once again return to the Stanley Cup Finals in the near future.

FA_AlexOvechkinThe 2014-15 NHL season has been no exception to the legacy of “The Great Eight”. Through March 13, Alex Ovechkin racked up 45 goals, which puts him on pace to take home a fifth Rocket Richard Trophy. There is also a very good chance that Ovechkin could take home the Art Ross Trophy one again this year, considering he is only two points shy of leading the league in overall scoring with 14 regular season games to be played. To put Ovechkin’s jaw-dropping numbers into perspective, he has 45 goals and 70 points, while the league average is 6.4 goals and 17.5 points. The 29-year old left winger has already established himself as one of the NHL’s biggest superstars, but can cement his legacy as an all-time great by continuing the success off his incredible 2014-15 campaign and what would be his first Stanley Cup title.

With Ovechkin on pace to potentially sweep the NHL Postseason Awards, there is no better time to take home a piece of sports memorabilia autographed by the Washington Capitals superstar. Capitals Prevail in D.C.’s 2015 Winter Classic

TroyBrouwer_WinterClassicThe Winter Classic has quickly transformed into one of the most highly anticipated sporting events of the year. Since 2008, a different city has hosted the NHL Winter Classic on New Years Day, a nostalgic outdoor hockey game played in some of the countries most iconic baseball and football stadiums. As the hype and viewers of the game have been growing rapidly with each passing season, the 2015 Winter Classic was not short on excitement.

The 2015 Winter Classic was held at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., one of the newest ballparks in Major League Baseball. The hometown Washington Capitals played host to Western Conference juggernauts, the Chicago Blackhawks. The Caps started the game firing on all cylinders, netting two goals in under 12 minutes. A Patrick Sharp power play goal put the Blackhawks on the board to end the first period with a 2-1 score. Just moments into the second, Chicago’s Brandon Saad netted his ninth of the year to tie the game up and set the stage for a dramatic ending. After 19 minutes and 27 seconds of back and forth hockey in the third period, Troy Brouwer capped off a Washington victory with a power play goal assisted by Alexander Ovechkin and Mike Green. The 3-2 victory for the Caps will prove valuable as the season goes on, as Washington is currently in a position to earn an Eastern Conference Wild Card bid.
