Chiefs Dominate Patriots in Week 4 Upset

Calling the New England Patriots Monday night performance against the Kansas City Chiefs dismal would be putting it nicely. In a 41-14 rout, the Chiefs completely steamrolled the Patriots, while shutting down MVP quarterback Tom Brady. The opportunistic Kansas City team played mistake-free football while picking apart Brady and the Patriots to hand New England its worst defeat since losing to San Diego 41-17 in 2005

A franchise that once dominated the NFL with a reputation as one of the league’s strongest forces, the New England Patriots is starting to look more like an amateur football team this year. Already off to a dismal start to the season at 2-2, the Patriots outlook for the 2014 NFL season doesn’t seem promising, despite being a perennial postseason contender. Tom Brady was picked off twice, with one interception returned for a touchdown, and sacked three times, including a strip-sack from Tamba Hali to set up for a field goal. Regardless of a terrible performance from Brady, he was still New England’s top performer, which is really saying something. If Bill Belichick doesn’t address the massive problems plaguing this Patriots team, such as massive holes in their offensive line and a lacking running game, the Patriots are in for an extremely rough season, as demonstrated on Monday night.

Meanwhile, things are looking up for the 2-2 Chiefs in Kansas City with a huge return from Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles. From coming off the bench with a recovering ankle injury to dominating the field for three touchdowns, Charles brought hope coupled with a lot of excitement back to Kansas City football fans. Despite a sprained ankle that kept him from playing last week in Miami, Charles proved he’s back at full speed while running for 92 yards against the Patriots. Supporting Charles’ stellar performance, Alex Smith threw for 248 yards and three touchdowns, with Knile Davis recording 107 rushing yards and Travis Kelce catching eight for 93 yards and a score. On a night that Chiefs fans were determined to reclaim the record for the loudest outdoor sports venue and reached that feat in the first half, Kansas City regained its faith in its football team.

Although the season is entering Week 5, the entire league is unpredictable and inconsistent, giving the Patriots a glimpse of hope for remaining a contender in 2014. With teams that many believed would play in the Super Bowl, including the 49ers and Saints, failing to live up to predictions, while unexpected forces, such as the dominant Cincinnati Bengals at the top of the league, the NFL is truly in for a wild season.
