The 2015 NBA Draft Sparks Hope for Franchises

With the completion of first round of the 2015 NBA Draft, dreams are coming true for young hopefuls as NBA teams used their early draft picks on the nation’s best players looking to enter the league. The highly anticipated 2015 NBA Draft started off with a thrill, as the Minnesota Timberwolves chose Karl-Anthony Towns, a highly decorated collegiate power forward and center out of the University of Kentucky, with the first overall pick.

As Towns heads to Minnesota, many NBA enthusiasts are expecting the Timberwolves to have a much improved year in the upcoming season after their not so memorable 16-66 record for 2015. Joining the Timberwolves from the highly competitive SEC, Towns posted an average 10 points per game with 6.7 average rebounds per game, which should take Minnesota’s offense to new heights in the future. With the first pick of the 2015 NBA Draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves could be on their way out of last place in the Western Conference and on their way to the top of the league.

With the 2nd overall pick, the Los Angeles Lakers added a truly talented guard to their roster with D’Angelo Russell from the Ohio State University. Awarded the Jerry West Shooting Award in his last season with the Buckeyes, Russell is projected to add some much needed shooting skills to Kobe Bryant’s struggling team. After a 21-61 record in the previous season, Russell’s 19.3 PPG is sure to help the Lakers at least break 500 next season.

2015 NCAA Champion, Jahil Okafor from the Duke University Blue Devils was selected with the 3rd overall by Philadelphia 76ers. As another team that can use a fresh face to improve their poor 18-64 record from last season, Okafor is a tremendous incoming asset to the Sixers. Possessing a raw talent at center, the Sixers added a much needed asset to their roster with Okafor shooting 7.3 PPG in just one year with Duke.

Kristaps Porzingis from Latvia signed with the New York Knicks as the 4th overall pick of the draft to bring his power forward/center skills and hope to the struggling franchise. Standing at 7’1″ and full of skill, Porzingis, along with other future New York draft picks, will bring a drastic improvement to the 17-65 Knicks. As a team that has had a rough recent history, the addition of Porzingis to the Knick is something that will be greatly appreciated by New York basketball fans everywhere.

5th overall pick Mario Hezonja is taking his Croatian-born, Barcelona-played talents to the Orlando Magic for 2015. Although he may not be a household name, it won’t take long for this upcoming small forward to emerge as a powerhouse in the NBA. Don’t count out the Magic as they add the early draft pick to their roster and sneak up as one of the league’s top talent in the future.

The Denver Nuggets snagged Emmanuel Mudiay with the 7th overall pick and immediately took their roster’s talent to the next level. After a 30-52 record in the 2014-2015 season, selecting the talented young point guard might be one of the best decisions Denver has made in quite some time. The scoring-fiend is sure to help the Nuggets pull themselves up by their bootstraps and rise up as a great basketball franchise once again.

Frank the Tank Kaminsky snuck into the top ten selections of the NBA Draft as the 9th overall pick by the Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets have struggled in recent history, but their newest head coach Steve Clifford is bringing new talent to their roster might be just what Charlotte needs to break 500 in the upcoming season. With skill that led the Badgers to the NCAA Championship finals, Kaminsky could be the x-factor that the Charlotte Hornets have been missing.

Finishing off the top ten picks of the 2015 NBA Draft is final selection Justise Winslow, who is certain to prove to be unforgettable. After just one season playing for Duke University, the All-star ACC player emerged as a key player to Duke’s success in the NCAA Championship game and became a fan-favorite nationwide. Selected as the 10th overall pick by the Miami Heat, this shooting guard is expected to bring huge ups, massive skill, and much needed heat to a roster that unperformed in the 2014-2015 season.

As the excitement of the 2015 NBA draft continues, only time will tell which franchises will come out with on top with their newest players. Basketball fans worldwide can revel in the anticipation of the upcoming NBA season, as new and rising stars join the rosters of their favorite teams.

Golden State Warriors Head to the 2015 NBA Finals

On a night where the Golden State Warriors really struggled to find any kind of rhythm on offense, small forward Harrison Barnes came up big in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals for a trip to the championship. Courtesy of Barnes’s spectacular 24 points, the Warriors are heading to the NBA Finals for the first time in 40 years for the chance to take home the coveted Larry O’Brien Trophy.

During the regular season, Harrison Barnes averaged just a little over 10 points per game but truly shined during his postseason performance when the Warriors needed it most in Game 5 of the Conference Finals. Despite facing a difficult time landing his shot against the Rockets and shooting just 7 for 21 from the field, league MVP Stephen Curry still posted 26 points to go along with eight rebounds and six assists. Unfortunately, Golden State shooting guard Klay Thompson was only able to log 22 minutes due to foul trouble and a flying knee by Houston Rockets small forward Trevor Ariza. With 9 minutes and 31 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Thompson got Ariza to bite on a pump fake, and while Ariza was still up in the air, Thompson made a move right into his knee. It appeared to be unintentional but Klay Thompson went down hard. Luckily, there is a week before the NBA Finals begin on June 4th, giving Klay Thompson a week to rest up and prepare to battle for the league title.

In addition to falling short of the big game, Houston Rockets shooting guard James Harden broke a record during the Conference Finals that isn’t one to be particularly proud of. Prior to Game 5, the previous record for the most turnovers by one player in a playoff game was held by John Williamson with 11; Harden surpassed that number and finished the game with 13 turnovers. The Golden State Warriors defense also seriously limited his shooting abilities, allowing Harden just 2 for 11 from the field. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr went on to praise Andre Iguodala’s defensive effort on James Harden, which was accompanied by 28 outstanding minutes from backup center Festus Ezeli. Normally, Ezeli does not see the court for too long but the Warriors needed a big body to defend Dwight Howard. Only one rebound shy of a double-double, Festus Ezeli’s efforts helped lift the Golden State Warriors over the Houston Rockets by a score of 104 to 90.

The Warriors haven’t won an NBA Championship since 1975 and the franchise hopes to change history next week. After sweeping the Atlanta Hawks in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Cleveland Cavaliers will meet the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals for Game 1 on June 4th. The two Finals participants match up well against one another, making the outlook for this series very close. The championship will feature arguably the two best players in the NBA between LeBron James and Stephen Curry. It will be very interesting to see if the Cavaliers defense can slow down Curry and the Warriors, while Golden State’s ability to stop King James will be put to the test. Without the services of power forward Kevin Love to accompany Kyrie Irving, Cleveland might suffer when it comes to matching up against the high scoring tempo in Golden State. Clear your schedule sports fans because this is going to be one of the most exciting NBA Finals in recent basketball history.

Wizards Take the Postseason By Storm

The Washington Wizards finished out the NBA regular season with a record of 46-36 to take the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference and were matched up to face the fourth seeded Toronto Raptors in the first round of the playoffs. Entering the series, the majority of NBA fans thought that it would be the closest and most entertaining first round match-up in the East, but instead the Wizards shocked the basketball world.

John Wall and Bradley Beal led the Washington Wizards into the first round ready to play, regardless of home court advantage being in favor of their opponent. As the series got underway, small forward Trevor Ariza was replaced with Paul Pierce, adding another surprise to the mix because of the veteran’s his old age. Despite the critics, Pierce proved his clutch gene is still in effect and came up huge for Washington in the first round. Throughout the series, Pierce played at a very high level and showed why he deserves the nickname “The Truth”. Meanwhile, the Raptors got very little production from their All-Star point guard Kyle Lowry and the entire team just seemed lost. Although Toronto was a frightening contender during the regular season, Washington’s defense made it awfully difficult for the Raptors’ offence to produce. The Washington Wizards swept the Raptors in four games, earning the team a few needed days of rest until they would face off against the Atlanta Hawks in the second round.

Due to their size and two All-Star caliber guards, the Washington Wizards have the ability to match up well against any team in the NBA and provide a serious threat. Even though Washington will face a top-ranked Atlanta team in the second round, the Wizards have a very good chance of pulling off an upset. The Hawks came into the postseason with a record of 60-22 for the number one seed in the Eastern Conference. Prior to meeting the Wizards, it took the Hawks six games to knock off the eighth seeded Brooklyn Nets. Continuing on their unexpected postseason run, the Washington Wizards stole the very first game of the series in Atlanta. With John Wall sitting out in Game 2, the Hawks evened the score to put the series at 1-1. Now, the Washington Wizards have three out of five possible games at home and control their fate. If the Wizards win the best of seven series against Atlanta, they will face the winner of Chicago and Cleveland in the Eastern Conference Finals.

At 1-1 in the second round against the Atlanta Hawks, the Wizards aren’t going down without a fight and look to emerge as a contender for the Eastern Conference title, despite being the underdog. Check out the video below to see the recent shipment of Washington Wizards game-used collectibles arrive at Fanatics Authentic and shop the selection of Washington Wizards memorabilia to celebrate your favorite NBA stars as the 2015 NBA Playoffs competition gets even fiercer.

Stephen Curry Named 2015 NBA MVP

The Golden State Warriors finished the 2014-2015 NBA regular season as the number one seed in the Western Conference with 67 wins. Their dominant season is largely courtesy of the strong play from point guard Stephen Curry. Curry was always one of the top players in the NBA, but this year under new head coach Steve Kerr, the two-time All-Star took his game to another level and was named 2015 NBA Most Valuable Player.

In just under 33 minutes per game, Stephen Curry averaged 23.8 points per game to go along with 7.7 assists and over 4 rebounds per game throughout the 2014-2015 regular season. The six year veteran is also recognized as arguably the best shooter in NBA history and for good reason. During the 2012-2013 NBA regular season, Curry hit 272 three pointers which broke the all-time record held by Ray Allen. He went on to break his own record this year with 286 threes and shot over 44 percent from beyond the arc while doing so. Curry also shot over 91 percent from the free throw line. The Warriors were ranked as one of the top defenses in the league and Stephen Curry even contributed to this reputation, while averaging two steals per game.

For most of the second half of the NBA regular season, it seemed like Stephen Curry was neck and neck with Houston Rockets shooting guard James Harden for the MVP trophy, but by the end of the season it was clear which player was well deserving of the trophy. The Warriors won 11 more games than the Rockets and Curry ended up blowing Harden out of the water when it came down to the MVP voting. Out of the 130 first place votes, Stephen Curry received 100 of them and the Warriors have a very special team this season thanks to their All-Star point guard. Leading the Warriors into the postseason with a first round sweep, Stephen Curry is the clear MVP of the league and hopes to bring Golden State its first championship since 1975.

In addition to his unbelievable jump shot that put his name on the map, many basketball fans would say that Stephen Curry has one of the best handles in the NBA, which makes him so tough to defend against. Curry can get his shot off at will and if the defense leaves him any inch of space, chances are it’s going to be a long night chasing the 6’3 point guard around the court. Earning his first league MVP title just six seasons into his professional basketball career, Stephen Curry is already on his way to ranking among the top player of his generation and writing his name in NBA lore.

The 2015 NBA Playoffs Have Arrived!

With the conclusion of a thrilling 82-game regular season, the competition is getting even hotter as the 2015 NBA Playoffs get under way. All sixteen spots in the playoffs were up for grabs for the majority of the season and as the regular season play began to wind down, one final night of play would decide the two number eight seeds for the postseason. Facing a tie in both conferences, the New Orleans Pelicans and Brooklyn Nets just barely clinched a postseason berth to set the stage for another thrilling postseason.

For the eight seed in the Eastern Conference, the regular season came to a close with a showdown between the Indiana Pacers and Brooklyn Nets. Before a Pacers loss that eliminated Indiana from the postseason, both teams had 38-44 records, but only the Nets earned the chance to continue their season for what’ll likely be just four more games against the Atlanta Hawks. Cruising to the top seed, Atlanta is seven games ahead in the East and will coast through the first round, and maybe even the second. Regardless of the Hawk’s dominant lead, LeBron James and his Cleveland Cavaliers are quickly emerging as the favorite to take the Conference Championship and advance to the NBA Finals. While the Cavs look to assert their dominance in the first series and will likely defeat the seventh seeded Celtics in a blown out, Boston has a bright future ahead considering their seven additional first round picks. The third seeded Chicago Bulls defeated the Hawks in the last game of the season to jump ahead of the Toronto Raptors, but may have been better off losing and ranking fourth rather than eventually facing the dangerous Cavaliers for a chance to compete for the conference title. Beneath the East’s big three players, the rest of the conference is fairly weak. In the fourth spot, the Raptors barely kept their home court advantage against the Washington Wizards, who would benefit from a first round exit and replacing their coach. Then there is a Milwaukee Bucks team that is using their trip to the postseason to integrate the hopeful new face of the franchise, Michael Carter-Williams.

The eighth postseason team to compete in the West Conference also came down to a tiebreaker between the New Orleans Pelicans and Oklahoma State Thunder. After both teams finished the regular season with 45 wins and 37 losses, the Thunder made a surprising exit from the postseason and the Pelicans advanced to the playoffs for a rough first round beating from the dominant Golden State Warriors. Even with future NBA great leading the Pelicans into the postseason, Anthony Davis is not quite talented enough to take down the the number one seeded Warriors and the Splash Brothers. Closing out the regular season with a ten game advantage in the West, it’s going to be tough for any team in the conference to stop Golden State. Regardless, the two and three seeded, the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Clippers will look to emerge as contenders. The Rockets and the Clippers are sure to move onto the second round with a depleting San Antonio Spurs teams and the mediocre Dallas Mavericks, standing in their way. After dropping from the second seed to the sixth seed due to a loss to the Pelicans, the defending champion Spurs will have to play exceptionally well on the road for the duration of their postseason run and fight their way back to the top for a shot at another trip to the finals. In a first round match-up between the Portland Trail Blazers and Memphis Grizzlies, a fourth seed with a worse record than the six seed will face an injury ridden roster for a series that could fall in favor of either team.

Although the postseason is almost a week in and the first round is reaching Game 3, the NBA is still as the beginning of a very lengthy road to the 2015 NBA Finals. Basketball fans should gear up for a month of play that will keep them at the edge of their seats, because each of these sixteen teams wont let the crown slip through their fingers easily. With plenty of epic plays and shocking upsets to come, even a minute of the 2015 NBA Playoffs should not be missed.

Fanatics Authentic Game Used Memorabilia

MoGameusedbaseballAutographed sports collectibles are a great way to commemorate a beloved athlete or preserve fond sports memories, but there’s nothing quite like game used sports memorabilia to get close to your favorite athlete. These one of a kind sports collectibles are items that are used or worn during a game, allowing sports fans to bring home a piece of the action and preserve unforgettable sports moments. Game used memorabilia ranges across a variety of sports collectibles, from a jersey worn by a player in a game, a piece of equipment like a football used during an NFL game, or a hat worn by an MLB player in the outfield.

FAGameWornIn an effort to bring sports fans and collectors authentic game used collectibles that they can trust are genuine, Fanatics Authentic developed exclusive relationships with various players and professional sports teams to receive these pieces right out of play. By working directly with these teams and players, Fanatics Authentic is able to serve as a first-party authenticator for all of its game used collectibles. With a system that requires a representative to witness the use of every piece of game used memorabilia, Fanatics Authentic is able to diligently document the authenticity of each item. Whether it be on the field or in the locker room, Fanatics Authentic representatives remove each item from play to certify with its exclusive authentication hologram and a unique alpha-numeric combination. Sports fans can use this code to reference their collectibles at any time in the massive Fanatics Authentic Verification database to prove its authenticity and get background information on the item.

In addition to game used memorabilia, Fanatics Authentic offers other similar, but more affordable sports collectibles that allow fans and collectors to own their very own piece of the action. Practice-used jerseys and equipment brings fans items that touched their favorite athletes’ hands, but are at a slightly lower price because they weren’t featured in an official game. Game-issued collectibles, which are items designated to be used in play or worn during a game, like a kicking football issued for a specific game that wasn’t used, are also a great addition to any sports collection. Player issued and team issued memorabilia are also very uncommon and valuable sports collectibles that include items that were not actually used in a game but were selected for a certain player or team and may or may not feature an athlete’s name or number, in addition to the team name or logo.

On the sports memorabilia market, game used collectibles are much fewer in number than typical sports collectibles, like signed jerseys and autographed balls, which makes them even more valuable. With only a limited number of items used by players in a specific game, and even less that are sold to the public, game used memorabilia is very rare. For example, a Peyton Manning signed jersey already holds a high worth, ranging from $600-$1,200, but a Peyton Manning autographed game-used jersey values more of $10,000 to $15,000. Since buying game used collectibles is an investment that has the ability to acquire a large amount of value over time, it is vital to take every precaution to ensure that these collectibles are authentic. Therefore, purchasing game used memorabilia is an asset to any sports collection and must be done so according the tips below.

MarteGameUsedBatTips for Buying Game Used Collectibles:

  • Buy Based on Athlete – Game worn or used items from sports heroes, such as Derek Jeter, or Hall of Famers, like Joe Montana and Michael Jordan, are valued most due to their legacy.
  • Invest in Potential Breakout Players – The biggest financial returns in sports memorabilia occur when an athlete’s autograph is affordable because they have yet to break onto the professional sports scene and then drastically increases in value when that player skyrockets to fame. For example, Malcolm Butler signed collectibles weren’t nearly as valuable before his game-winning interception at Super Bowl XLIX as they are now.
  • Look for Items from a Significant Event – Items used during the Super Bowl, World Series, All-Star Game, or game in which an Athlete reached a milestone are even more valuable.
  • A Certificate of Authenticity is a Necessity – Fraud is a major problem in sports memorabilia and can be an even bigger issue when shopping for game used collectibles. Therefore, documentation from a reputable authenticator is of absolute importance when purchasing game used items.
  • Choose a Reputable Retailer – Many work exclusively with athletes and teams to guarantee the authenticity of each piece with a certification system that pulls collectibles directly from play and documents its use.
  • Shop Smart – Although it may seem like common sense, game used collectibles should not look brand new or untouched and if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Get Educated – Knowing the habits of an athlete, as well as details about a player’s uniforms and equipment are simple ways to avoid being scammed. Athletes always wear a specific size in their uniform and typically have brands they represent consistently.

The 2015 NBA All-Star Weekend to Hit New York

AnthonyDavis_AllStarThe 2014-2015 NBA season has reached the midway point, which means one thing; All-Star Weekend. Basketball’s brightest stars in the NBA will align for a show-stopping weekend of play and thrilling events. Over the weekend of February 13-15, New York City will host the 2015 NBA All-Star festivities at both the Barclay’s Center and the iconic Madison Square Garden for three days of excitement featuring the biggest names in the basketball.

According to tradition, the Celebrity Game and the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge will occur on Friday night. As a classic All-Star event, hoops fans and non-fans alike enjoy watching former basketball legends, WNBA players, actors, musicians, and athletes from across other sports take the court for the Celebrity Game. As of the 2015 All-Star Weekend, the Rising Stars challenge will consist of a new format. Replacing the rookie versus sophomore match-up, the contest will feature a face-off between a U.S. Team and World Team of the best young players in the league. Team USA includes an explosive lineup of dominant players, like Trey Burke and Michael Carter-Williams, that will go up against a World Team composed of the most upcoming foreign players, such as first round draft pick Dante Exum and Canadian superstar Andrew Wiggins.

JohnWall_AllStarOn Saturday night of NBA All-Star Weekend, one of the most explosive contests in sports will ensue with the Shooting Stars contest, Three Point Contest, Skills Challenge, and Slam Dunk Contest. The Three Point Contest should be a showdown that will be remembered for years to come, as sharp-shooters Kyle Korver, Wesley Matthews, and J.J. Redick will face-off against one another, as well as the nearly unstoppable Splash Brothers of the Golden State Warriors, Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry. In an obstacle course that tests the player’s passing, shooting, and dribbling abilities, the Taco Bell Skills Challenge will feature the NBA’s most elusive guards like Brandon Knight and Kyle Lowry. For the grand finale of Saturday night, the Slam Dunk Contest will return to its traditional format as Zach Lavine, Victor Oladipo, Mason Plumlee, and “The Greek Freak” Giannis Antetokounmpo throw down some of the nastiest dunks that basketball fans have ever seen.

The most anticipated event of the weekend will finally occur on Sunday afternoon at The World’s Most Famous Arena known as Madison Square Garden. The 64th annual East versus West match-up will showcase the finest players that professional basketball has to offer with two rosters filled with superstars. The East looks to defend its title, fresh off of its first All-Star Game win in five years courtesy of a remarkable performance from Cleveland’s Kyrie Irving in last year’s contest in New Orleans. In this year’s competition, the East will count on Irving’s chemistry with his new teammate LeBron James to lead a high-powered squad to its second consecutive victory. The West traditionally dominates the mid-season match-up, but the West will be without the injured future Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant once again at the 2015 NBA All-Star Game and hopes that DeMarcus Cousins can fill some awfully large shoes. With big men Anthony Davis and Damian Lillard quickly rising in the ranks as the NBA’s next big stars, the Western Conference looks to the pair of two-time All-Stars to carry the team this year.

Entering the second half of the NBA season, the most skilled and talented players in the league gear up for the All-Star Game and strive to declare their respective conference as the biggest player for the remainder of the year. As the match-up creates a rivalry between the most premier players in the NBA, sports fans are in for yet another All-Star Weekend filled with exciting competition and unforgettable moments.

Toronto Raptors – The New Beast of the East?

RaptorsPlaqueStep aside LeBron, D-Wade, and Carmelo. While these big name basketball superstars still continue to grasp national headlines, it’s the Toronto Raptors that are the most deserving of the spotlight for the 2014-2015 NBA season. Through the first 26 games of the regular season, Toronto is 20-6 and has a stronghold on first place in the Eastern Conference standings.

Since the NBA expanded across the border and the Raptors became an NBA expansion team in 1995, Toronto basketball has been nothing short of an embarrassment. In the team’s nearly 20-year history, they have won only one NBA playoff series and finished the regular season over .500 a mere five times. The former home to superstars such as Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady, and Chris Bosh has been known more for their flashy jerseys and super-fan Drake than their on-court rather than success.

However, under the leadership of new head coach Dwane Casey, things are starting to turn around up north. Under Casey, Toronto has improved in each of the past four seasons, winning their second division title in franchise history in 2014. Along with the intangible help on the bench, the Raptors are developing a few superstars of their own. In the past several seasons, few players have shined brighter on the court than Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan. The former Houston Rocket Lowry has run the back-court flawlessly for the Raptors since his acquisition in 2012. Through December of the 2014-15 season, Lowry has averaged nearly 20 points a game and has been a key piece to Toronto’s success in Eastern Conference play. Lowry’s running mate DeMar DeRozan is shaping up to be a perennial All-Star selection for years to come. Since DeRozan was selected by Toronto ninth overall in the 2009 NBA Draft out of the University of Southern California, the ex-Trojan has shown significant signs of improvement in each of his six years with the Raptors and earned his first NBA All-Star Game nod in 2014. With the help of big man Jonas Valanciunas and the high-flying Terrance Ross, Toronto is very well on their way to back-to-back division championships and quite possibly their first NBA Finals appearance in franchise history.

Celebrate the success of the NBA’s first place Canadian team and their growth as a legitimate basketball contender with can’t-miss Toronto Raptors memorabilia. With an incredible assortment of authentic hand-signed items from Toronto superstars of past and present, NBA fans can celebrate the franchise’s all-time points leaders with memorabilia pieces from Vince Carter and Chris Bosh or cheer on current Raptors with an assortment of DeMar DeRozan photos. Be sure to shop Fanatics Authentic to find the perfect piece of Toronto Raptors memorabilia to take home for your sports collection or a unique sports gift for a special fan.
